A new workshop series aimed at women in agriculture will provide strategies for improving farm estate and transition plans. The event, titled "Leaving a Lasting Legacy: A Succession Planning Series," will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Eastern Time in Columbia City, Indiana. The series will be held on four dates: January 21, January 28, February 4, and February 11, at the Purdue Extension office. It will also be offered at locations across Kansas, through a partnership between Kansas State University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Purdue University.
The workshops will cover essential topics such as the importance of succession planning, family communication, and the financial and legal aspects of estate and transition planning. Each session will include a keynote speaker, who will be simulcast to all locations, followed by a question-and-answer period and a hands-on activity for participants. Meals will be provided during each session.
“Planning for what happens to your farm assets when you’re gone can be daunting, but it’s so important, especially in agriculture, so that the transition to the next generation goes smoothly,” said John Woodmansee, Whitley County Extension Educator. “This series will help participants learn best practices and new strategies for the transition and estate planning processes so they can take that back to their farm or ranch and help lead the way in creating or reevaluating their plans.”
The program also aims to strengthen networks for rural women, offering a space for sharing experiences and reducing the isolation often felt in agricultural communities. While the focus is on women, men are also welcome to attend.
The registration fee for in-person participation is $60 if registered by January 13, and $75 after that date. A virtual attendance option is available for $75. Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions. More details and registration can be found at https://purdue.link/Legacy.
This initiative is supported by USDA/NIFA under Award Number 2023-70027-40444 and is offered by Purdue University, an equal access/equal opportunity institution.
