K State Develops Brush Tool to Ease Cattle Stress

By Scout Nelson

A new tool created by Kansas State University is helping reduce stress in cattle, which could lead to higher artificial insemination (AI) success rates. The project is a collaboration between K-State’s Technology Development Institute (TDI) and the College of Agriculture.

Experts in cattle reproduction designed a device that gives cows a way to feel more comfortable during the AI process. Early studies showed that reducing stress by getting animals familiar with their surroundings led to a 10% improvement in reproduction outcomes.

“Once we saw the benefits of getting animals acquainted with the facilities for AI success, we began to think about adoptable strategies to promote positive reinforcement during handling,” Dias said. “You often see cow brushes and how the animals enjoy rubbing against them on social media, so we thought, ‘Let’s come up with a way to place a cow brush in the alleyway so the animals can enjoy themselves while they wait their turn.’”

The idea was to install a sturdy cow brush at head height in the alleyway so animals could rub against it while waiting. For help with the design, they contacted the TDI team, which worked with them to build a prototype.

The brush needed to be easy to install on different chute types, adjustable in height, and able to handle pressure from cattle. Engineers created and tested multiple designs before finalizing one. Two prototypes are now in use for research.

According to Bret Lanz from TDI, “Nicholas and his team have been great to work with, and we are hopeful that this new tool will help to aid in their studies and perhaps have a large impact on the cattle industry.”

K-State’s TDI continues to support innovation in agriculture by turning creative ideas into practical tools for better animal care and production.
