Livestock Advocate Wins Top Ranch Award

Livestock Advocate Wins Top Ranch Award

By Scout Nelson

A respected figure in American ranching has been chosen to receive the 2025 National Golden Spur Award for her exceptional contributions to the livestock and beef industries. She has spent decades supporting the advancement of ranching practices, beef marketing, and organizational leadership.

A co-owner of a leading Angus ranch, she made history by becoming the first woman to lead key livestock organizations. She served as president of the Kansas Angus Association in 1982 and the Kansas Livestock Association in 1994. Later, she chaired the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and became president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in 2004.

Her calm, science-based leadership during the 2003 BSE (mad cow disease) crisis played an important role in maintaining consumer trust and guiding public communication.

“It is not an exaggeration to say she is the ‘gold standard’ of selfless service to the ranching industry,” said a retired executive from the Kansas Livestock Association.

Beyond leadership, she actively supported genetic improvement and beef promotion programs. Her involvement in the national checkoff program helped advance research, marketing, and education for the beef sector.

Over the years, she has earned many honors, including Trailblazer of the Year from BEEF Magazine in 2004, Stockman of the Year from Kansas State University in 2008, and the 2022 Jay B. Dillingham Award for Agricultural Leadership and Excellence. Most recently, she received the 2024 Visionary Award from the Cattlemen’s Beef Board for her long-standing impact on beef promotion.

Her most meaningful legacy is her family’s continued love for ranching and the Flint Hills land. The National Golden Spur Award, sponsored by several agricultural organizations, will be presented on October 4 in Lubbock, Texas. This honor recognizes a lifetime of leadership, vision, and deep respect for the livestock industry.
