Kansas Dairy Industry Celebrates Growth This June

Kansas Dairy Industry Celebrates Growth This June

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) celebrates National Dairy Month throughout June by recognizing the strong growth of the state’s dairy industry. Kansas continues to emerge as a major dairy hub in the country.

This year, construction of a new 23,000-cow dairy in southwest Kansas marks a significant development in the sector. Additionally, the new Hilmar Cheese Company plant recently opened in Dodge City, while several other dairies across the state are expanding.

According to the latest report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas milk production increased by 7.7% in March and 11.4% in April compared to the same months in 2024. In April 2025 alone, Kansas produced 382 million pounds of milk—up from 343 million pounds a year earlier.

The state also reported a 9.25% increase in the number of dairy cows, reaching 189,000 head in April. Output per cow also rose by 2.02%, with cows producing an average of 2,020 pounds of milk during that month.

The dairy industry’s impact goes beyond the farm. In 2024, milk and dairy cattle production generated over $1 billion in total economic output for Kansas and supported more than 1,380 jobs across communities statewide.

This growth reflects Kansas' commitment to supporting agriculture and strengthening its role in food production and economic development. The dairy sector not only feeds families but also fuels job creation and community prosperity.
