New Senate Bill Boosts Local Food and Farmer Opportunities

New Senate Bill Boosts Local Food and Farmer Opportunities

By Jamie Martin

A new bipartisan bill, the Strengthening Local Food Security (SLFS) Act of 2025, aims to help local farmers and expand access to healthy food. Senators Jack Reed and Jim Justice introduced the bill.

The SLFS Act lets the USDA form partnerships with state and tribal governments to purchase locally grown and raised food from small and mid-sized farmers, ranchers, and fishers. These foods will go to schools and community food programs, creating reliable markets for producers and better food options for families.

This new plan encourages local food production, supports economic growth in rural areas, and builds more resilient food systems. It also helps tackle food insecurity by making fresh, nutritious food available in underserved communities.

A major part of the bill focuses on technical assistance. Farmers will receive help with food safety planning, training, and upgrades needed to move into larger commercial markets. These services will prepare them to meet regulations and grow their businesses.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition supports the bill, saying it gives local producers real opportunities to thrive while supporting healthier communities. The bill builds stronger connections between local agriculture and public institutions, helping everyone from schoolchildren to food bank clients.

The SLFS Act provides a clear path to link small farms with large buyers, offering long-term stability and promoting sustainable agriculture.
