Bright futures fueled by 2024 Kansas corn scholarships

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Corn Commission and the Kansas Corn Growers Association have introduced the winners of the 2024 Kansas Corn Next Generation Scholarships.

This initiative aims to support college students across various majors, encouraging them to delve into the corn industry and confront agriculture's pressing challenges. It's an investment in those who will eventually steer the industry towards innovation and sustainability.

Eligibility for these prestigious scholarships requires either the student or their parents to be members of the Kansas Corn Growers Association, residency in Kansas, or attendance at a Kansas college. A dedicated committee, comprising Kansas Corn leadership and industry experts, meticulously reviewed the applications.

Emily Koop, Kansas Corn's director of grower services and market development, expressed her admiration for this year's recipients: “This group of young professionals is outstanding,” highlighting their potential to significantly impact the agricultural sector.

Among the graduate awardees are Gustavo Roa Acosta, Leonardo Bosche, and Sarah Frye, all from Kansas State University, specializing in Agronomy.

The undergraduate scholarships have been awarded to a diverse group of students: Morgan Barba (Fort Hays State, Agricultural Education), Gabriel Elliott, Nicole Haase (Kansas State, Animal Sciences & Industry), Mackenzie Malson, and Elizabeth Sturgis (Kansas State, Agricultural Education and Global Food Systems Leadership), and Carissa Sohm (Kansas State, Agronomy).

This scholarship program not only highlights Kansas Corn's commitment to education and the agricultural industry's future but also showcases the broad array of pathways students can take to contribute to this vital sector.
