Kansas Wheat is calling all growers to register for the ninth annual National Wheat Yield Contest before the May 15 deadline.

This year’s contest, organized by the National Wheat Foundation, is especially exciting due to the introduction of a user-friendly website that simplifies the entry process, even from mobile devices.

Anne Osborne, the contest director, emphasized the enhanced data analysis feature of the new website, which will further support the sharing of effective production practices.

The contest features four categories: irrigated winter wheat, dryland winter wheat, irrigated spring wheat, and dryland spring wheat. A total of 26 national winners, including state winners, will be named, each receiving a trip to the Commodity Classic in Denver in March 2025.

Eligibility requires contest fields of at least five continuous acres, sown with newly purchased, certified wheat seed. A third-party supervisor must verify the field during the harvest. The entry fee is $100, but sponsors provide vouchers to cover these costs.

Participants must keep a 10-pound grain sample from their entry for quality assessment, with the top three quality samples in each class receiving an additional $250 prize. Last year's winners set impressive benchmarks, with the top yields in the dryland and irrigated categories being significantly above average.

The contest boasts a broad array of sponsors, including major agricultural companies and associations, highlighting the industry-wide support for innovation and excellence in wheat farming. DTN/Progressive Farmer serves as the official media outlet for the contest, ensuring wide coverage of the event and its outcomes.
