The U.S. Department of Commerce announced a $5.5 million investment in Kansas on December 23, 2024, to strengthen the agriculture industry and enhance electrical infrastructure. These initiatives aim to create economic opportunities and improve disaster resiliency in the region.
Key Investments:
The Land Institute, Salina:
Receives $3.2 million for constructing a new greenhouse and headhouse to support the perennial grain industry.
Matched with $795,486 in local funds, this project will foster business opportunities in agriculture.
City of Beloit:
Awarded $2.3 million to upgrade electrical substations for consistent service, enabling business expansion and job creation.
Matched with $578,140 in local funds, the project is expected to create 25 jobs and attract $10 million in private investment.
National and Local Perspectives:
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted the importance of these projects in her statement. “These EDA investments will create new opportunities in the agriculture industry and ensure reliable electrical service in areas recently impacted by natural disasters,” she said.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly praised the collaboration, stating, “These grants strengthen our electrical grid and agriculture industry while spurring economic growth and creating new jobs for our state.”
Role of Regional Planning:
The North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) played a crucial role in securing these funds by aligning public and private sector efforts to create a roadmap for regional development.
Funding Source:
These projects are funded under the 2023 Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, which allocated $483 million for disaster relief and recovery for areas affected by major natural disasters in 2021 and 2022.
