North American Trade Supports Farm Success

North American Trade Supports Farm Success

By Jamie Martin

Trade plays a major role in the success of modern agriculture, and few partnerships are more important than those between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The ongoing review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is expected to shape the future of agricultural trade across North America.

For farmers and ranchers, access to stable and dependable markets is critical. Canada and Mexico are among the largest buyers of U.S. agricultural products, purchasing nearly one-third of American farm exports each year.

Agricultural exports to Mexico were valued at nearly $31 billion last year, while exports to Canada approached $29 billion. These markets create important sales opportunities and help support farm income across the agricultural sector.

The current review provides all three countries with a chance to improve the agreement while preserving the benefits it has delivered since taking effect in 2020. Agriculture leaders believe the review should focus on strengthening trade relationships and removing barriers that limit market opportunities.

Expanding dairy market access remains a priority, along with addressing concerns about seasonal produce imports that can affect domestic fruit and vegetable growers. Solving these issues could provide additional growth opportunities for U.S. agriculture.

Farmers often invest significant time and resources before seeing a return from their operations. Because crops and livestock require long production cycles, producers depend on stable trade policies and reliable export demand when planning for the future.

The impact of agricultural trade extends beyond the farm. Export activity supports transportation networks, food processing facilities, manufacturing businesses, and many jobs in rural communities.
