Sen. Pat Roberts honored for agricultural advocacy

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Soybean Expo, held recently, celebrated the distinguished career of former U.S. Senator Pat Roberts by awarding him the Meritorious Service Award. This accolade is a testament to Roberts's enduring commitment to agriculture and soybean farmers during his tenure in Washington, D.C.

Roberts's political journey, spanning across 10 presidential terms, began with his election to the House of Representatives in 1980, representing Kansas's First District.  In 1996, he progressed to the Senate, serving Kansas for 24 years, becoming the state's longest-serving congress member.

His dedication to Kansas agriculture was highlighted by Charles Atkinson, Great Bend, and Bill Wiley, Lyndon, both of whom praised Roberts for his understanding and support of agricultural issues.  Roberts's efforts in securing funding for international marketing and enhancing crop insurance have been pivotal for the farming community.

Bob Henry, Robinson, succeeding Wiley as the ASA representative, also commended Roberts for his advocacy, particularly in discussions about biodiesel and crop insurance. Roberts's impact was further recognized when he received the Soy Champion Award from the American Soybean Association in 2014.

Roberts's legacy extends beyond agriculture; he made significant contributions as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and served on other key committees, including the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Intelligence Committee, and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

A fourth-generation Kansan, Roberts is a Kansas State University journalism graduate and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Alongside his wife, Franki, Roberts raised a family deeply rooted in Kansas's values and traditions.

The Kansas Soybean Association, hosting the Expo at the Maner Conference Center in Topeka, has had a long-standing relationship with Roberts, who previously keynoted the event.  His dedication to advocating for crucial agricultural policies over 24 years is gratefully acknowledged by soybean growers across Kansas.
