Challenging Growing Conditions Impact Harvest Progress in Weekly Crop Report


The latest report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reveals the challenges faced by farmers during the week ending July 9, 2023. With only 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, agricultural activities were impacted. Topsoil moisture supplies were varied, with 8% rated very short and 10% rated surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies fared slightly better, but still showed deficiencies, with 13% rated very short and 2% surplus.

In terms of field crops, winter wheat maturity lagged behind last year and the five-year average, with only 92% mature. The harvest progress of winter wheat was also significantly delayed at 59%, compared to 93% last year and the 84% average.

Corn condition ratings varied, with 47% rated good and 8% rated excellent, but 5% rated very poor. Soybean condition ratings were more favorable, with 51% rated good and 6% rated excellent. Sorghum and cotton conditions also showed a mix of ratings.

The report highlights the progress of various crops, including soybeans emerging at 95% and cotton squaring at 57%. However, challenges persisted, as planting progress for sunflowers trailed behind last year and the average.

Overall, pasture and range conditions varied, with 3% rated excellent, 31% rated good, and 28% rated very poor or poor.

This update serves as a valuable resource for farmers and stakeholders, offering insights into crop conditions and the impact of challenging weather on agricultural operations in the specified period.
