Kansas hay market slows amidst rainy weather

By Scout Nelson

In the week ending July 6, 2024, the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service reported a slight uptick in hay sales despite subdued demand across regions.

Prices held steady for most hay types, with dairy quality hay experiencing a modest decline of $0.05 per point RFV.

The recent rainfall, while beneficial for many, posed challenges for haymaking activities statewide.

In the Southwest, trade activity remained sluggish with light demand persisting. Prices for dairy alfalfa saw a marginal decrease of $0.05 per point RFV, while grinding alfalfa prices remained unchanged.

Ground and delivered alfalfa prices also showed stability, ranging from $155 to $170 per ton locally. Triticale baleage prices varied between $35 and $45 per ton.

Similarly, the South-Central region reported slow trade and light demand, with dairy alfalfa prices down by $0.05 per point RFV.

Prices for grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets remained steady. Alfalfa prices ranged from $1.15 to $1.25 per point RFV, with ground and delivered prices holding at $150 to $165 per ton. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets were quoted between $260 and $280 per ton.

In the Southeast, demand for hay remained light with stable prices observed for bluestem and brome hay varieties.

Prices for various types of hay such as stock cow, bluestem grass, and brome hay ranged from $130 to $205 per ton.

Across the Northwest and North Central/Northeast regions, trade activity was slow with light demand prevailing.

Prices for grinding alfalfa and various types of grass hay were mostly stable, while alfalfa prices ranged widely depending on quality and form.

Overall, the hay market in Kansas reflected cautious trading amidst favorable weather conditions and steady pricing across different hay categories.
