According to the latest data from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, the hog and pig inventory in Kansas on June 1, 2023, stood at 1.90 million head. While this represents a 1% decrease from the previous year, it marks a promising 3% increase from March 1, 2023.
The breeding hog inventory remained stable at 155,000 head, unchanged from June 1, 2022. However, it showed a notable 7% increase from the previous quarter. On the other hand, the market hog inventory, totaling 1.75 million head, experienced a slight 1% decline from the previous year but witnessed a 2% upturn from the previous quarter.
The pig crop for the period of March to May 2023 in Kansas reached 864,000 head, reflecting a 2% decrease compared to the previous year. Sows farrowed during this period amounted to 80,000 head, indicating a 6% decline from the previous year. However, there was positive news in terms of pig survival, with an average of 10.80 pigs saved per litter during the March to May period, compared to 10.40 in the previous year.
Looking ahead, Kansas hog producers have revealed their intentions to farrow 76,000 sows during the June to August 2023 quarter, marking an 11% decrease from the actual farrowings during the same period the previous year. Furthermore, the projected farrowings for September to November 2023 are 77,000 sows, representing a 5% decline from the actual farrowings during the same period in the previous year.
While Kansas experienced a slight decline in hog inventory compared to the previous year, the market remains promising. Stable breeding hog numbers and increased market hog inventory suggest a positive outlook for the industry.
