Kansas hosts chinese delegation for paint horses

By Scout Nelson

An international trade delegation from China traveled to Kansas and Nebraska in October to procure superior American Paint Horses for the growing Chinese equestrian market. Co-hosting the delegation were the American Paint Horse Association and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA).

Industry professionals and horse lovers were among the visiting group, and they were all keen to discuss joint ventures with regional suppliers, exhibitors, trainers, and breeders.

“This is the first equine-related trade team hosted by KDA and represents a unique opportunity to enhance the quality of equestrian sports in China,” said Suzanne Ryan-Numrich, international trade director in the KDA Ag Marketing team.

The delegation aimed to identify horses suitable for youth equestrian activities, as well as broodmares and stud prospects to help develop the equine sector in China.

The Chinese equestrian market has seen rapid growth in recent years, driving demand for high-quality horses. The delegation’s visit offered a chance to engage with American horse owners and breeders, exploring possibilities for future collaborations. “We are excited to engage with local horse owners and breeders,” said A Tao, a horse trainer from Beijing.

Supporting agricultural growth, including opportunities to market and sell livestock genetics internationally, is central to KDA’s mission. These efforts were supported through KDA’s membership in U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE), with USDA Market Access Program funding and in collaboration with the American Paint Horse Association.

This visit highlights the growing global interest in American Paint Horses and reflects the potential for international partnerships within the equine industry.
