The Kansas Farm Service Agency (FSA) recently announced new flexibility for winter grazing on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land. Thanks to a newly approved waiver, Kansas producers can now apply to graze CRP acres from November 1 to March 1, a period previously off-limits due to policies adopted in 2020.
Under this waiver, CRP grazing will be allowed on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by the FSA state executive director. The Natural Resources Conservation Service, the technical service provider for the CRP, will assess each application to ensure that grazing will not cause long-term negative impacts on the grasslands. Additionally, the waiver requires that grazing days be limited according to existing policies, with minimum ground cover standards still in effect.
Producers interested in taking advantage of this opportunity should contact their local FSA office to apply for nonemergency grazing on CRP lands between November 1 and March 1. This flexibility is expected to provide new options for Kansas livestock producers, helping them better manage winter grazing needs while preserving conservation practices.
