Kansas hay market holds steady amid low demand

The Kansas Department of Agriculture and USDA Market News Service report indicates stability in the Kansas hay market, despite low demand across various regions, with prices remaining consistent across different types of hay.  

In the Southwest region, despite the slow movement, dairy alfalfa, ground and delivered, along with grinding alfalfa, maintained a steady price. Prices included dairy alfalfa at 1.35-1.45/point RFV and good stock or dry cow hay ranging from $240-$250. Large rounds of fair/good grinding alfalfa were reported at $180-$190 delivered. The region saw significant activity with 9,176 tons of grinding alfalfa and 625 tons of dairy alfalfa traded in the week ending December 23. 

Moving to the South-Central region, the trend of steady prices continued for dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, and alfalfa pellets. Horse alfalfa in small squares was priced at $13/bale, and dairy alfalfa had a RFV point price of 1.40-1.50. Large rounds of fair/good grinding alfalfa were delivered at $190–$200. The week's trade volume included 6,252 tons of grinding alfalfa and 125 tons of dairy alfalfa. 

In the Southeast, dairy alfalfa prices were steady with an RFV point price of 1.40-1.50. Good stock cow hay was delivered at $260-$270. Bluestem grass hay in small squares was priced at $200-$205. The region reported a trade of 1,070 tons of grass hay for the week ending December 23. 

In the Northwest, prices for dairy and grinding alfalfa held steady. Horse or goat alfalfa in 3×3 squares were noted at $300. Dairy alfalfa with a RFV point price of 1.40-1.50 and fair/good grinding alfalfa in large rounds was priced at $190-$200. 

The North Central/Northeast region echoed the trend of steady prices for dairy and grinding alfalfa. Dairy alfalfa was priced at 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Premium Horse hay in small squares was $12-$13/bale. Large rounds of fair/good grinding alfalfa were noted at $210-$220. The region reported trades of 384 tons of grinding alfalfa and 575 tons of dairy alfalfa for the week. 

The report shows a steady market for hay, despite low demand, with prices remaining consistent across regions and types. The data offers valuable insights for farmers, traders, and buyers.
