Kansas sorghum connection field day series begins

By Scout Nelson

A collaborative initiative between the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission, Kansas State University's Department of Plant Pathology, and K-State Research and Extension is launching the Sorghum Connection field day series. This program aims to equip Kansas sorghum producers with essential knowledge to enhance their productivity and profitability.

The field days will cover topics such as stalk rot management, hybrid selection, fertility, and other crucial cropping practices. These insights will be demonstrated through on-farm research trials, providing practical examples for producers to implement.

The Sorghum Connection series kicks off with three field days across the state. The first event will be held at the Bavaria Field Day on September 4, followed by the Dighton Field Day on September 11, and concluding with the Russell Field Day on September 18. Each event starts at 8:30 AM and features demonstrations of over 20 hybrids, stalk rot management trials, and studies on fungicide and cropping systems.

Dr. Rodrigo Onofre, the program's lead, expressed the initiative's goal: "Our hope is to bring multi-disciplinary, data-driven information to Kansas sorghum producers to help improve on-farm productivity and profitability." These field days are designed to address the specific needs of Kansas farmers, offering valuable, research-based insights.

Industry experts and representatives, including Kansas State University faculty and K-State Research and Extension agents, will share their knowledge at the events. The series reflects the dedication to supporting Kansas sorghum producers by delivering information that directly benefits their farming operations.

Kansas Grain Sorghum Director of Communications and Outreach, Maddy Meier, emphasized the significance of the initiative: "To say that the Sorghum Connection team is excited for this new series is an understatement.

We are proud to have put together a new generation of field days that have been built upon producer input, meaning this series is truly put on for farmers, by farmers." The Sorghum Connection field day series represents a significant step forward in enhancing the productivity and profitability of Kansas sorghum farming.
