KLA’s YSA Kicks Off in Topeka

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) welcomed young cattlemen and women from across the state to the first session of the 2025 Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA) in Topeka on February 25-26. This educational initiative, exclusively sponsored by Merck Animal Health, aims to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the livestock industry.

Over the course of two days, the attendees engaged in a comprehensive program designed to enhance their understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the livestock sector. The session included discussions about KLA's member services and the critical role of advocacy in shaping public policy favorable to the livestock industry.

Participants had the unique opportunity to observe KLA lobbyists in action at the state Capitol and attended the annual KLA Legislative Meeting & Dinner. This experience provided them with firsthand insights into the legislative process and the importance of effective communication with policymakers.

Additionally, the class participated in a Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee meeting, which further emphasized the legislative aspects of agricultural advocacy. A financial planning seminar led by experts from Pinion equipped the young stockmen and women with essential knowledge to manage their financial resources effectively within the agricultural context.

An interactive media training session, conducted by KLA communications staff and Greg Akagi, a farm broadcaster from WIBW-Topeka, was a highlight of the event. This session covered strategies for engaging with the media and effectively telling the beef production story. Participants practiced these skills through mock interviews, learning how to handle inquiries and present their messages confidently.

The program not only fosters a deeper understanding of the livestock industry but also builds skills that will aid these young professionals in becoming eloquent advocates and informed leaders. The second YSA session, scheduled for May, will delve into agribusiness and beef retail, further expanding the participants' industry knowledge.
