Sedgwick County kids dive into wheat science

Sedgwick County kids dive into wheat science

By Scout Nelson

In Sedgwick County, the spirit of Kansas Day is alive and well among its youngest residents, thanks to an innovative program focused on the state's number one crop: wheat. The Wheat Science program, run by the local 4-H extension staff, offers 3rd and 4th graders a unique opportunity to delve into the world of wheat through a hands-on experience that combines cooking and science education.

Students from Maize, Goddard, Wichita, and even homeschool groups have been getting their hands floury by mixing, measuring, kneading, and baking their own loaves of whole wheat bread.

But it's not just about the baking; the program also educates these young learners on how wheat is grown, harvested, and milled right in their communities, highlighting the effort and processes behind making a loaf of bread.

The 4-H Department is excited to share this engaging learning experience and is open to expanding the program. Schools interested in bringing wheat science to their classrooms next year are encouraged to get in touch.

This program not only teaches kids about agriculture and the importance of wheat in Kansas but also fosters a deeper connection to their local food systems.
